Honduran Cuisine

(yuca con chicharron from Latino Grill, Pigeon Forge)

Latino Grill
Pigeon Forge

They can't all be winners. Part of being adventurous is trying things that you may ultimately find repulsive. This is a photo of a Honduran dish that looked promising because it was made with cheese, avocado, and lime. Who doesn't like that? But it was the pork skin, a non-benign type unlike the kind found in bags at the grocery store next to the chips, but rather like the pig had met its demise in the alley behind the restaurant. The sauce had a pungent, fermented smell that I could not get past and although I tasted the dish, I did not eat much.

This was my first experience with Honduran cuisine so I am not sure if this typical of all Honduran cuisines or just this restaurant. Baleadas, a Honduran tortilla filled with beans, egg, sour cream, and cheese were also on the menu and something I might give a shot on a subsequent visit. Anyone else ever tried Honduran food?

Er, perhaps Pigeon Forge is not the locale to try Honduran cuisine. Don't they also feature something up there called Dixie Stampede, wherein you eat everything at a rodeo and you don't even get utensils? Something tells me, Dine-o-meter, that it's location, location, location in this instance . . .

Yes, Pigeon Forge is not usually ones first choice for Central American cuisine. However; my El Salvadoran experience in Chattanooga went so well, I had high hopes for Honduran cuisine as well.

HELLO, I AM HONDURAN, AND FROM THE WAY YOU WERE DESCRIBING IT, I MUST SAY IT WAS PROBABLY NOT FRESH. FOR YOU SAID THAT THE IT HAD A PUNGIENT ODOR, AND A FERMENTED LIKE FLAVOR. PLUS WHEN I MAKE YUCA CON CHICHARRON, I NEVER PUT CHEESE ON IT, AND THE CHICHARRON IS USUALLY MEATY. ALSO WAS IT EVEN SERVED WITH CURTIDO, AND A SALSA DE TOMATE? AND WAS THE LIME A GARNISH? BECAUSE YOU DON'T COOK IT WITH LIME. ALSO, WHAT KIND OF HONDURAN RESTAURANT IS CALLED PIGEON FORGE. THAT DOESN'T EVEN SOUND HONDURAN, OR AN APPETIZING PLACE TO EAT, HAHA. USUALLY HONDURAN RESTUARANTS, HAVE NAMES LIKE RICON CATRACHO ETC. BUY YEAH, DON'T LET THAT EXPERIENCE DETOUR YOU FROM HONDURAN FOOD, BECAUSE IT IS REALLY DELICIOUS. BEST PLACES TO TRY IS SOMEONES HOUSE AS USUAL, A LATIN AMERICAN CHURCH, OR THE COUNTRY ITSELF HAHA.

Thanks for the comment El Catracho. Yes, maybe it was just that one restaurant that was not very good. I eat Salvadoran cuisine all the time and love it. Honduran food can't be that different. I would like to get an invitation to someones house. Food cooked by someones Honduran mom would be great!
